A carbon steel fastener can be considered an alloy product when the magnesium content exceeds 1.65%, the silicon or copper exceed 0.60% and chromium is less than 4%.  Additionally, chromium, nickel, and molybdenum are used to improve the ability of the alloys to be heat treated.  This creates a wide array of strength and ductility combinations.

Common examples of alloy steel fasteners are SAE J429 Grade 8, ASTM A354 Grade BD, ASTM A490, and ASTM A193 B7.
